Asteroid, Three Massive Asteroids Will Fly 'Close' To Earth.
It was just last week when the news of an asteroid named 2006 QQ23 performing a flyby on Earth next month came to light. Although it’s not yet clear if the asteroid 2006 QQ23 would hit us or not, another three asteroids are reportedly expected to move past Earth tomorrow on July 24. First one of these asteroids is dubbed 2019 OD, and its expected to move past our Earth at a distance of 219,375 miles, which is fairly close in astronomical terms. To put into perspective, Asteroid 2019 OD will be closer than the moon from our Earth tomorrow on July 24.
Asteroid 2019 OD was spotted just three weeks back and is expected to hurtle past our Earth at 1:31 PM UTC (2:31 PM BST). It’s 394 feet wide and is travelling at 42,840 miles per hour. However, all is good since it hasn’t been tagged hazardous by NASA and poses very low risk of hitting our Earth tomorrow. Moreover, 2019 OD isn’t the only asteroid that’s been predicted to move past Earth this week. Other two asteroids, namely, a 361-feet wide 2015 HM10 and a 561 feet wide 2019 OE, have also been predicted to approach closer to our Earth tomorrow. The 2015 HM10 is traveling at 21,240 miles per hour whereas 2019 OE will be 597,706 miles away from Earth.Speaking of near-earth Asteroids, an average of 30 new discoveries are added every week, as per NASA. As of 2019, more than 19,000 near-earth Asteroids have been discovered so far. These NEOs are characterized by NASA using optical and radio telescopes which helps them determine the size, shape, rotation, physical composition of these asteroids. Most of these NEOs are characterized with the help of round-based and space-based photometric and spectroscopic measurements (visible and infrared “colors” indicating composition), light-curve measurements (brightness changes that indicate shape and rotation), and long-arc high-precision astrometry (indicates positions).
Now although these asteroids are supposed to skin past Earth tomorrow, NASA hasn’t released any more official details surrounding these.
